Dubai Press Club and DP World Hold Financial Literacy Training for Journalists

UAE-based Journalists Learn How to Interpret Financial Information

Dubai Press Club (DPC), in collaboration with Global trade enabler DP World, organised a financial literacy workshop for UAE-based media professionals on Thursday, as part of DPC’s ‘Advanced Economic Journalism Programme.’

Titled ‘Financial Literacy for Journalists’, the workshop focused on training journalists on how to interpret financial information and translate it into a language that most people can understand.

The session is one of several organised by the Dubai Press Club and DP World as part of the ongoing programme, which started in October 2018 with the aim of enhancing the skills and knowledge of local journalists in business reporting.

On the occasion, Daniel Van Otterdijk, Group Communications Senior Vice President, DP World, said Dubai’s financial and economic growth has established it as a leader in many sectors and has driven its transformation as a financial and business hub. “The media play an important role in communicating these developments, and investing in their training and understanding of often complex issues is essential to helping businesses like ours communicate more effectively with our stakeholders.”

He added: “Our goal is to help improve financial literacy among journalists so that that they can produce accurate and knowledgeable stories covering business and financial news, including the interpretation of financial reports. We look forward to working with the Dubai Media Office on this programme in the years to come.”

A total of ten journalists attended the workshop supported by the DP World Hub, the learning and development arm of DP World. The session was led by Group Finance Director Srinath Rajanna, an industry professional with more than 20 years of experience in the sector

Hessa Kalantar, Senior Manager, Media Content Development at Dubai Press Club said the workshop comes within the framework of cooperation between Dubai Press Club and DP World. “This collaboration reflects the common desire of both DPC and DP World in ensuring the success of the Advanced Economic Journalism Programme. “DP World has collaborated and supported DPC’s various initiatives and programmes in a joint effort that seeks to strengthen Dubai’s position as a centre of development.”

The session was mainly designed for reporters with limited or no experience in writing about business and who have never taken an accounting, finance or business course. Topics in the programme included: ‘An introduction to Accounting and Reporting Terminology’; ‘Understanding Financial Accounting Principles’; Understanding Financial Statements’ and ‘Financial Statement Analysis’.

The ‘Advanced Economic Journalism’ programme addresses a comprehensive range of professional areas and is aimed at helping economic journalists polish their skills and keep abreast of changes and trends. It features hands-on training sessions, interactive workshops and assessments.

Throughout the year, DPC organises a number of workshops and interactive sessions in partnership with leading media organisations to equip journalists with the skills required to cover various events and write in-depth news stories and analysis while maintaining high journalistic standards. Targeting mainly media professionals and youth, including people interested in the media field, the programmes aim to strengthen Dubai’s position as a leading global destination for media industry.
